South Africa’s dairy industry runs on accurate testing. Every litre of milk that moves from farm to factory passes through a sampling step — and the quality of that sample directly affects the reliability of the fat, protein, somatic cell count, and antibiotic residue results that follow.
Yet vial selection is often treated as an afterthought. Here’s what dairy QC managers and laboratory supervisors in South Africa should consider when choosing the right sample container for their operation.
1. Material Compatibility
Dairy preservatives — most commonly azidiol and bronopol — interact differently with different plastics. Ensure your vials are manufactured from virgin polypropylene rather than recycled or blended materials. All ALS dairy vials use European-manufactured virgin PP that has been tested for preservative compatibility.
2. One-Piece vs. Two-Piece Construction
Separate lids introduce contamination risk. A lid placed face-down on a sampling bench, even momentarily, can introduce bacteria that invalidate a somatic cell count test. One-piece flip-top vials — like the Belgium Vial Rubber (Mould 48.B) — eliminate this risk entirely.
3. Volume Requirements
The standard dairy sample volume in South Africa is 30ml for milk fat analysis using the Gerber method, and 15ml for somatic cell count by flow cytometry. A 2oz (60ml) vial provides adequate headspace and fill line clearance for both applications. For bulk samples at the silo or tanker level, 8oz and 10oz formats may be more appropriate.
4. Colour Coding
High-volume dairy operations — processing hundreds of samples per shift — rely on colour coding to prevent mix-ups between farms, batches, or time points. ALS supplies its full dairy range in a selection of standard colours, with custom colours available on request for large orders.
5. Chain of Custody
For regulatory submissions, export certification, or dispute resolution, tamper-evident custody vials provide an auditable record that the sample was not opened between collection and analysis. ALS’s custody vial range includes 2oz, 4oz, 8oz, and 10oz formats.
